Friends of
AmicitiA Winery The 2004 growing season
is off to a jump-start following an unusually warm March. Little tender
budsburst from their warm winter retreat about two weeks before their
typical wake up call. An earlier bud-break means growers around the
state are nervously counting the days until frost danger is past-
typically May 15 inSonoma County. Hillside-grown vineyards are less
susceptible to freezing temperatures, as cold air tends to drain into
the valleys and spare the upper reaches. Some vineyards use overhead
sprinklers or huge fans toprotect from frost. The two vineyards that
are controlled by AmicitiA have no such protections in place, so we
are praying to sneak by again this year! At the same time that preparations
for the 2004 crop are underway, we are getting very excited about
the emergence of the first of our 2002 vintage from the aging cellar.
In 2002 we made two Zinfandels that wethink are the best we have made
to date. The combination of near-perfect growing conditions for Zinfandel
(slow ripening without damaging temperature spikes near harvest) and
our understanding of the vineyardsgave us two wines to be quite proud
of. We will be showing our Zins at a tasting in San Jose on May 2nd
and in Healdsburg on May 8th (see details on the left). Beginning
this spring, we are inaugurating our Amicitia Wine Club. Make sure
to read carefully the details below and on the next page, as membership
gives our customers an incredible shot at our new releasewines before
the rest of the world sees them. Also, you get 20% off all of our
wines and apparel! |

Zinfandel- Yin and Yang
We are men of balance. In the past, some may
have said we “lit the candle at both ends” (one way to achieve balance?)
but today the truth is we find joy in work and play. Our winemaking
reflects this desirefor equilibrium. Within each wine we make we
are striving for balance between fruit (sweet), acid (sour),and
tannin (bitter). Our Zinfandels of the past years have been creatures
of restraint. They are clearly Zins, but with the restraint that
is not often found in California Zinfandel. In 2002 we widened ourspectrum
of wine-discipline and allowed for some new innovations. Order Wine

Alexander Valley Zinfandel
“Katherine’s Vineyard” $24
This is the vineyard where we began our dedication to making wine.
We have come to know each vine and truly grasped what “ripeness”
means for the Zinfandel here. The 2002 is stylistically in line
with what wehave made in the past- peppery bright fruit (raspberry
and strawberry) with a touch of darkness and depth (due to about
5% Petite Sirah). It has an incredibly complex body and an edge
of tannins. Our Alexander Valley Zin is body and substance without
the flaunt that many Zins have become. We produced only 45 cases
and used no synthetic chemicals on the grapes. Order

Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
$24
The fruit comes from the upper bench lands of Dry Creek on the Forchini
family property. It is jammy and round with signature Dry Creek
Zin flavors of dried black fruits, white pepper and a big, bold
mouth feel. It is reckless and racy where our AV Zin is poised.
Generally, the “monster Zin” will not last the same amount of time
in your cellar as the leaner Zin with more acid and tannin. Our
Dry Creek Zin is meant to drink within two years. If you are a big
California Zin drinker, ours will be right up your alley. We made
49 cases. Order

AmicitiA Wine Club
In order to give our top customers the first
opportunity to get their hands on our releases, we are introducing
the Amicitia Wine Club. The primary facet of the Club is three shipments
of Amicitia new releases throughout the year. Each shipment will
consist of two different wines. Customers may choose to receive
one of each or two of each wine with each shipment. Along with the
bottles will be detailed information on the wineand vineyard so
that those who are served the wine can be sufficiently impressed
by your knowledge.
The best
part of this opportunity isthe auxiliary benefit, which entitles members
to receive 20% off all orders of wine and merchandise (we have really
nice aprons and hats!). Please mail or fax the
form to become a member. The first shipment will occur mid-May,
so please get your forms in quickly!
Thanks for your support,
Chris Russi and Tim Nordvedt
